The Small Study was a favorite room of Adelicia Acklen and her family. This room was used as a family sitting room in the evening, and it was converted into an apartment for Susan Heron and Ida Hood, the founders of Belmont University. The two women pictured in the 1898 photograph are teachers at Belmont College. It was later used as a dormitory room for Belmont students through the 1970s. The original gas lighting fixture is lost, and the lighting fixture in the Small Study, although originally from the mansion, was taken from another room. The surround of the fireplace was an 1853, coal-burning fireplace. It was converted to cast-iron sometime after 1898. The fireplace mantle is original.
