The Creation of Metro Nashville

Title

The Creation of Metro Nashville

Subject

Consolidating Nashville and Davidson County governments

Description

Because of significant growth in Nashville after World War II, the city was pressured to reform its government. Generally, attempts at consolidation were not successful, but after one failed attempt, the Nashville-Davidson Co. metropolitan charter was passed by majority vote. What, if anything, distinguished Nashville from cities that failed repeatedly?

Ultimately, the rapid growth of the population, the political platforms of the city and county governments, and the annexations of Mayor West led to the success of the consolidation of the Nashville Metropolitan area.
